Formal Night on a Disney Cruise: A Classroom for Kids Dining Etiquette

Seriously, wear your regular clothes, minus swimwear, and you’re good to go. One of the perks about getting dressed up for formal night on a Disney Cruise is the picture opportunity. On formal nights, or optional dress up nights, Disney characters will be waiting for you in the atrium, dressed in their finest clothes.

Captain's Gala Dinner

On our ship, the Fantasy, it’s by the shopping area and there is an orangish glow to all my pictures there. I definitely prefer it when they are in the Atrium because those pictures are beautiful, clear and crisp. If you have a nice dress from a wedding, bring that. There will be those in sequined gowns and others in jeans. Do what you want or what makes you comfortable.

Disney Cruise Dinner Dress Code Explained

Cruises are mostly about having fun, and formal nights are in that spirit. They’re for people who want to commemorate their cruise with a night of class and elegance, and we highly recommend them. If it isn’t your style, or what you think of as cruising, then it isn’t something you need to worry about. Admittedly, I packed more for our seven-day cruise than I did for three weeks in Europe. It was just the combination of shoes, formal attire, costumes, evening and daywear, in addition to all the fish extender gifts.

Semi-Formal Night Attire

Between the theming and amazing waitstaff, you’ll have plenty of help. You’ll look forward to the experience every night. And if you’re deciding between a Disney Cruise and some other cruise line (or if you already have one booked), this is one of the areas where Disney excels.

Each Disney cruise ship has some fabulous dining opportunities onboard and they all have a dress code. There was no "formal" night expect for our meal at Remy (which was great). Personally, it didn't matter to me, as I was focused on the food and family conversation and not with what others were wearing. There is one semi-formal night, which is the first sea day. If you’re not an experienced cruiser (I sure wasn’t!), there is a lot to know in the booking stages. Things like where’s the best deck to be on, what dining time do you want, how to book kids clubs and excursions… all are much easier with an experienced travel agent.

Meet the Captain, watch a wonderful show, get some great photos and enjoy the wonderful dinner menu. On the Disney Fantasy the show for formal night is usually Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular. On the Disney Magic it is Twice Charmed – An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story. I think the best show for formal night is on the Disney Wonder. This is probably my favorite Disney Cruise show of all – The Golden Mickey’s. Formal night is a great opportunity to have your photo taken with the Captain.

Plus a nice Mickey Bar ice cream treat to top it all off. The formal night menu has all kinds of different menu items to try – for both kids and adults. Cruises are about fun, and formal nights are about showing off how good you look in a suit. Swimsuits are less of an imperative on Alaska sailings than they might be on other itineraries.

Sailing on the Disney Wish: An Overview

On a 7 Night Cruise, Formal Night will usually be on the first full day of sailing. For instance, if your cruise leaves port on a Saturday, the Formal Night will be on a Sunday. There is a lot of confusion amongst first time Disney cruisers about whether or not there is a Formal Night on their sailing. I used this opportunity to have a family picture taken by the Christmas tree, although I would have loved to have the picture taken by the staircase. They are not going to kick you out of the dining room because you don’t have an evening gown on. We’re getting ready to set sail on our newest adventure with DCL Magazine!

I’ve seen men wearing golf shirts and slacks at brunch. I’ve also seen women wearing silk capris with kitten heels and a nice top be fine at Palo. The guests I have seen turned away were wearing blue jeans and yoga pants. Just like in the parks, there is never a requirement that a young girl wear any sort of princess attire ever. That being said, a sizable subset of girls under the age of ten do end up wearing some form of princess dress while cruising.

Are you ready to set sail aboard Disney Cruise Line? When sailing on Disney Cruise Line, most onboard dining locations are “cruise casual,” meaning that casual attire, such as shorts and T-shirts, are permitted. However, there is one exception, as swimwear and tank tops are not allowed. Only certain cruises offer what is known as “formal” or “semi-formal” night, and we’re sharing your complete guide to these formal nights on the Disney Cruise Line. Disney is the only line requiring tuxes and suits for men, and gowns and dresses for women on formal nights.

They serve dinner every night and Brunch on each sea day. The new changes are controversial as many people would like to see the previous dress codes be retained. On Feb. 22, 2024, Disney Cruise Line updated the dress code for adult-exclusive restaurants. Each adult restaurant used to have its own dress code, but Disney Cruise Line announced in June 2022 that the dress code would apply to all adult-only restaurants.

They spent time with them when the kids needed an audience for their own magic tricks. Use this time to encourage your child to try new foods. Our daughter even ordered an appetizer off the adult menu to try. Neither were real fond of it, but they still tried it.
